Why We Made Pyronoun Pins

Transgender students are often overlooked and misgendered in the STEM community. As part of PyroTech’s mission of inclusion, we want all students to be comfortable and respected. To achieve this, the team brainstormed and decided to make 1 inch pronoun buttons (PyroNoun buttons) that everyone could wear and recognize. These buttons include: “she/her,” “he/him,” “they/them,” “any pronoun”, “ask for pronouns”, and blank buttons to fill in.

PyroTech members routinely wear name buttons and pronoun buttons during meetings and competitions. We hope to raise awareness of the power of language to demystify many of the misperceptions associated with these concepts. At competitions, pyronoun buttons are handed to anyone who would like one. We grow inclusion and respect for everyone by encouraging all to use a person’s pronoun correctly.
